Break Caliper Replacement

Brake calipers are a vital component to your vehicle’s braking system.  Caliper failure can and will cause you to get into an accident.  It is important that your brakes are always in top working condition.

WHAT IS BRAKE CALIPER REPLACEMENT?

When the brake pedal is pushed, the brake master cylinder will make brake fluid flow to the calipers.  This applies pressure on the piston, located inside the caliper which then pushes the brake pads against the rotors.  This friction will either slow or stop your vehicle.  It is rare that calipers go bad unless they are damaged by driving with past spec brake pads or a brake pad completely worn off.

HOW IS BRAKE CALIPER REPLACEMENT DONE?

Remove the wheel and then a special tool is used to compress the piston fully into the new caliper. Once the brake lining is attached to the new caliper, we make sure everything is bolted firmly in place – including tightening the brake hose.  We then bleed the brake lines, put the wheel back on and the brake caliper replacement is complete.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Brake calipers should be replaced in pairs.  Never let your brake pads go past 90% wear.  Many brake pads are designed with a squeal maker to give you warning that it is time to replace. Always better to be safe than sorry especially in this high heat.  If you ever notice anything unusual with your braking experience stop by for a complimentary inspection.

SYMPTOMS OF BAD CALIPERS

  1.     Brake fluid leak
  2.     The brake pedal feels soft.
  3.     High pitch noise when stopping.
  4.     Vehicle pulls to the left or right when braking.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO REPLACE CALIPERS?

The average price for a brake caliper replacement can vary there is a good chance you might also need pads or rotors. The best thing to do is to contact Bays Auto for a quote.

CAN I DO A BRAKE CALIPER REPLACEMENT MYSELF?

No, unless you have the right tools and experience you should not attempt replacing calipers on your own.  Furthermore, installing calipers incorrectly can cause brake failure and thus an accident.

IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE WITH BAD BRAKE CALIPERS?

I would not recommend it as loss of braking can result in a serious accident and knowingly driving with bad brakes could be big legal troubles.  Furthermore, you can ignore the need for a brake caliper replacement, but a damaged caliper could put unnecessary wear on your vehicle and cause more damage.  Inadequate brakes or no brakes at all could be a life-threatening issue
