14 May Auto Maintenance: Thermostat Replacement
The thermostat behaves like the thermostat on your air conditioning. When your home reaches a certain temperature, the AC turns on to cool the home. When your vehicle hits a certain temperature, the thermostat opens so coolant can flow through to the engine compartments to cool off the motor. When the temperature in your engine is below a certain temperature it shuts off the flow of coolant to your motor so it will perform optimally.
HOW IS A THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT DONE?
A thermostat is relatively easy to replace if you know what you are doing. Access to the thermostat is always the most difficult part of the job. If you attempt to do this make sure you don’t install it backwards. Find it, remove it and replace. Top off or replace the coolant and test vehicle.
WHEN DO YOU REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT?
Typically, anytime there is a repair in the cooling system and or if the vehicle overheats with odd temperature fluctuations.
